Meet the Team

We have a highly talented team who are passionate about researching and developing systematic trading strategies and infrastructure.

    President – GAM Systematic

Dr Ewan Kirk is the President of GAM Systematic. He co-founded Cantab Capital Partners in 2006, which became part of GAM Systematic in October 2016. His daily focus is research and development, risk management and managing the Cantab quantitative team. Prior to founding Cantab, Ewan Kirk ran the 120-strong Goldman Sachs Strategies Group in Europe, where he was responsible for all of Goldman Sachs’ quantitative technology. Ewan Kirk holds a PhD in Mathematics (General Relativity) from the University of Southampton, a Certificate in Advanced Study in Applied Mathematics from the University of Cambridge and achieved a First Class degree in Natural Philosophy and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow.

Dr Frédéric Desobry is co-CIO for GAM Systematic's Cambridge team. Frédéric joined GAM Systematic in September 2019 after spending three years at Systematica Investments in Geneva and London as head of equity research. Prior to that, he was a quantitative analyst then a portfolio manager at Bluecrest Capital. Frédéric began his career at Global Advisors, a commodity-specialist CTA based in New York and London. Overall, Frédéric has spent over eleven years designing and managing all aspects of the systematic trading strategies' lifecycle. Frédéric holds Masters and a PhD in Signal Processing (Machine Learning) from the École Centrale Nantes and he spent five years as a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge.

    Co-Chief Investment Officer

Dr Tom Howat is co-CIO of GAM Systematic Cambridge. Prior to this, he was chief technology officer of Cantab Capital Partners, which became part of GAM Systematic in October 2016. Tom and Dr Federic Desobry (Co-CIO) take overall responsibility for the investment and research process across the full suite of GAM Systematic Cambridge products. Tom heads up the team of scientists responsible for ongoing infrastructure development. Much of the framework underpinning all of the GAM Systematic Cambridge team’s critically important functions has been designed by Tom and his team. This includes the back-testing systems; trading and automated execution; real-time risk management and signal computation; trade allocations between different managed accounts etc. Tom joined Cantab at inception. Prior to this, Tom spent seven years at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he obtained degrees in Mathematics and a PhD in Mathematical Biology.

    The heart of our business

Over half of our employees are engaged in research and development – it is absolutely central to what we do.
GAM Systematic Cambridge deliberately focuses on attracting top scientists from a wide variety of backgrounds, rather than primarily from other investment houses.  This broad range of experience has enabled us to think differently and as a result build portfolios with limited correlation to major systematic indices and to our biggest competitors in the space.
GAM Systematic Cambridges's team combines a diverse skill set, with the common denominator being academic excellence and collegial team spirit.  We believe that a collaborative atmosphere and the spirit of team work are ingrained in GAM Systematic Cambridges’s psyche and underpin our investment philosophy.
